KYSSAR COLOR GUARDS

Color Guards support chapter meetings, grave marker ceremonies, immigration, naturalization events, and many other ceremonial programs for SAR and DAR.

The Dr. V. Edward Masters Memorial Color Guard
The first color guard in modern KYSSAR history was that formed by Dr. V. Edward Masters in 1996. It performs 40 to 50 events within a 100 mile radius each year. This color guard has since been named for its founder and was formed with members of the Louisville Thruston Chapter, located in Louisville,Jefferson County, Kentucky. It was recognized in 2004, 2005, and 2006 by the National SAR, winning the President General’s Color Guard Award as the best chapter color guard in our country. This champion was retired from the national competition in order to give other States and chapters a chance to be recognized. Dr.V.Edward Masters Memorial Color Guard Membership Introduction Brochure below describes its activities.

Membership Introduction

Fifes and drums make our events come to life. The sounds add both historical meaning as well as the sheer enjoyment of the music. Hayden Fuller provides all the necessary instruction, so if you have any musical inclination this is a wonderful opportunity.
We need more musicians, don’t be bashful!

One of our most popular activities is the posting of the colors. Many of these are for SAR, DAR, and community events.

We offer classroom presentations to local schools in support of American history segments. Typically this includes description of our uniforms (scout/ranger shown) and weapons and is a high point for many of the schools.

Carrying and firing muskets is a very popular activity with both the general public and our members. You will be given plenty of instruction on the safe loading and firing of the weapon.
Our the past years, grave markings have become an increasing activity for the color guard. Rev. Forrest Chilton is in charge of these events and instrumental in the marking of patriot graves.

The Federal Court in Louisville holds naturalization proceedings on a regular basis. Our color guard has become an active participant in these ceremonies, welcoming new citizens. This activity is coordinated through J. B. Hitt.

The color guard participates in numerous events celebrating our country’s history and remembering our veterans. The SAR provides a reminder of the importance of our ancestors service and the need to remember their contributions.

The Govenor Isaac Shelby Chapter Color Guard

The second chapter color guard was formed by the Governor Isaac ShelbyChapter in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Ky. Led by chapter president Rev. Forrest B. Chilton, and start up assisted by some of the members of the Louisville Thruston Chapter color guard. The new members trained fast and well, taking on a formidable schedule and achieving within 2 years of startup, national recognition from the SAR Guardsman Magazine, winning the prestigious Baron Von Steuben award for 2007 as the best new color guard in the country. Following is an article showing this energetic color guard and telling about its activities.

Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter, KYSSAR (l-r) First Row: Tom Higgins, Charles Scott, Forrest B. Chilton (Pres. GISC), Back Row: David Myles, Will Schrader (KYSSAR Secretary), Phillip Yenowine, Alex Probus, Noble Roberts, Dick Bierman (LTC CG); taken at the KYSSAR Spring meeting at Maysville, 29 March, 2008.

The Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter won the prestigious General von Steuben Award from the National SAR Guardsman Magazine. The SAR Guardsman National Color Guard Committee selected GISC for the extra-ordinary effort made by this small, relatively new chapter.

This two year old chapter, with its 29 compatriots, participated in an incredible 49 events in 2007. This included 33 wreath laying events and turning out as many as 10 uniformed compatriots at a time, about a third of the membership. They are to be congratulated, and also their leaders, CG Cmdr. Tom Higgins and GISC President Forrest B. Chilton.
